Major Curriculum Revamp: Nigerian Universities Introduce New Academic Framework

Major Curriculum Revamp: Nigerian Universities Introduce New Academic Framework. The National Universities Commission (NUC) recently introduced a revamped curriculum for Nigerian universities. During a meeting with stakeholders last week, Dr. Chris Maiyaki, the acting Executive Secretary of the commission, emphasized that the implementation of this new curriculum is scheduled to commence in September 2023. This was also referenced in the recently published NUC Bulletin “FG Insists CCMAS Implementation to Begin September 2023”

Maiyaki explained that the new curriculum, Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), “He emphasized that 70% of the total content of the CCMAS provided by the experts under the watch of NUC and the 30% of the other contents ceded to the individual University Senates to depict the uniqueness of their various universities was a welcomed novel idea which would impact positively on Nigerian Universities”.

The revised curriculum, as detailed by The PUNCH, entails the official recognition of 17 distinct faculties in Nigerian universities, including Administration and Management, Agriculture, Allied Health Sciences, Architecture, Arts, Basic Medical Sciences, Communications and Media Studies, Computing, Education, Engineering and Technology, Environmental Sciences, Law, Medicine and Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sciences, Social Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine.

Noteworthy aspects of the curriculum overhaul include the separation of Mass Communications into a unique discipline called Communications, encompassing degree programs in Advertising, Broadcasting, Development Communication Studies, Film and Multimedia, Information and Media Studies, Journalism and Media Studies, Mass Communication, Public Relations, and Strategic Communication. Furthermore, Agriculture has been divided into programs corresponding to its constituent components, such as B.Sc. Agricultural Economics, B.Sc. Animal Science, B.Sc. Crop Science, and B.Sc. Soil Science.

Additionally, the restructuring involves the separation of Architecture into a distinct discipline, offering programs like Architecture, Architectural Technology, Furniture Design, Interior Architecture Design, Landscape Architecture, and Naval Architecture.
