Google has announced a new Google Career Certificate in Cybersecurity with 2,000 scholarships for Africans. The certificate is designed to help learners develop the skills they need to pursue a career in cybersecurity. It is available online on Coursera and can be completed in under six months.
There is a growing demand for cybersecurity skills across all sectors. It is estimated that there are about 3.5 million cybersecurity job vacancies globally, up from just 1 million in 2013.

“To accompany this launch, we will be providing 2,000 scholarships in conjunction with our distribution partners – ICT Authority in Kenya, The Roothub in Nigeria, and RLabs in South Africa – all of which have strong workforce development programs to reach learners, provide them access to the Cybersecurity certificate, and support them through their learning journey”.
To apply for a scholarship, learners must meet the following criteria:
- Be a resident of Sub-Saharan Africa
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Be able to commit to completing the certificate in under six months
- Have a strong interest in cybersecurity
