Brief History of CIBN

The story behind Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria  (CIBN). The history of the Institute dates back to November 28, 1963 when one hundred and twenty-four bankers assembled at Randle Hall, Surulere 
and consequently passed a resolution for the establishment of the Local Centre of the Institute of Bankers, London, in Nigeria with the mandate of promoting banking education in Nigeria and esprit-de-corps among professional bankers.
Thirteen (13) years after being successfully run as a local center and having gained considerable administrative experience and recorded significant success in training and educating its members, the Institute was registered in 1976 as the Nigerian Institute of Bankers, a company limited by guarantee. The making of Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.
But it was not until 1977 that it became operational and autonomous. The metamorphosis of the Local Centre into the Nigerian Institute of Bankers represents a story of particular worth in that the attainment of this autonomous status was a fulfillment of a dream long conceived. 
Thirteen years of the Institute as a local center, was a period that saw the unflinching loyalty of the early Nigerian bankers to the building of a profession with evergreen offshoots offering shelters to numerous professional bankers.


This is the first stage of Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria CIBN exams, and it comprises eight (8) subjects, namely:

  1. Elements of Banking,
  2. Basic Economics,
  3. Accounting & Business Finance,
  4. Business Law,
  5. Fundamentals of
  6. Marketing,
  7. Information & Communication Technology,
  8. Quantitative Techniques and Business Communication Skills.

The objectives of the examination at the Diploma level include:

    • To develop and expand the understanding of the Financial Service Environment.

    • To ensure a steady stream of technical level professionals for the industry.

    • To equip candidates with requisite knowledge and expose them to modern banking practice and processes that will enable them fit into the banking system.


The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria CIBN Intermediate professional exam level consists of the following six (6) subjects, which are as follow:

  1. Financial Economics,
  2. Financial & Management Accounting,
  3. Marketing of Financial Services,
  4. International Trade & Finance, Strategic
  5. Management &
  6. Leadership and Corporate Financial Management.

The objective of this level of the examination is to provide candidates with the professional knowledge and skills required to take up middle management role in the banking and finance industry.


This is the last level of CIBN exams, the Chartered Banker Level consists of four core (compulsory) subjects and five elective subjects out of which a candidate is expected to select only one, namely

  1. Financial Planning & Control,
  2. Treasury Management,
  3. Human Capital Management,
  4. Banking Regulation & Supervision and Principles & Practice of Risk Management

The core subjects include: Banking Law, Ethics & Corporate Governance, Bank Lending & Credit Administration, Management of Financial Institutions and Practice of Banking. The objective of this level is to provide candidates with the requisite professional knowledge, skills and competencies required for senior management roles in the industry. Successful completion of the three stages of the examinations will lead to the award of the Flagship Certificate known as the Associateship of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (ACIB).

Entry Qualification for Examinations

The minimum qualification for the Institute’s examinations is first degree, equivalent professional qualification accepted by the Institute or any other equivalent qualification from reputable and recognized institutions.

Mode of Examination

Examinations are conducted April and October in all state in Nigeria, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
